“It was fantastic to see Adlib deploy a CODA system at such a prestigious international sporting event. The compact and flexible nature of our systems helped mitigate every challenge faced by the production team, as well as delivering consistent, high quality audio to every seat in an 11,000 seat arena. We’re proud to have been at the heart of a World Cup event such as this.”

The Vitality Netball World Cup took place at the 11,000 capacity M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool this year. The hugely popular event, which spanned ten days, enjoyed sell-out crowds and was covered on TV by Sky Sports and the BBC. The tournament was won by New Zealand in a thrilling finale against Australia. On home territory, events production specialists Adlib supplied full technical production for the event, including a CODA Audio Sound system.

As a major international sporting occasion, the event was a unique challenge that demanded the highest standards in audio quality for live and recorded announcements, music playback and live performances from a singer and a choir. Adlib designed a system based around CODA Audio AiRAY and ViRAY to provide the necessary crystal clear audio and consistent coverage across the whole arena. Good sight lines to the event’s central video screens were also a fundamental requirement, so the compact nature of the speakers added even greater value.

The system comprised seven main hangs that ensured full coverage of the arena, including the temporary stand at the ‘stage end’. Two hangs of 8 x AiRAY at the ‘D’ end of the arena and one of 6 x AiRAY at the ‘stage’ end were supplemented by four hangs of ViRAY to cover the long sides of the arena (2 x 9 on each side). Two hangs of 8 x CODA SCV-F subs were flown centrally.

The arena was divided into two courts for the initial matches of the tournament and then became a single court for the final rounds. The audio system was zoned to provide the requisite coverage in both configurations. With floor space at a premium, all amplification was installed into the roof of the arena. As a passive box requiring only a single channel of amplification, the use of ViRAY meant fewer amplifiers were required, saving much in the way of rigging time, especially since final access to the roof was via stairs. The all-round practical advantages of the CODA system allied to its high quality audio made it the perfect choice for this high-profile event.
