“The rigging is unparalleled, and the performance of the speakers is sensational in relation to their weight. TiRAY, for example, is equipped with two small 5-inch cone drivers, yet it is full-range capable and equally suited to reproducing music and speech.”

The University of Siegen enjoys an excellent reputation as a centre for the teaching of the sciences. Research in the fields of sensor technology and nano sciences are among the focal points of the education on offer, and a rising number of students attest to the high regard in which the institution is held.

Reflecting this growth, the University recently expanded its footprint with a new inner city campus, at the heart of which is an auditorium centre. As well as a large lecture hall which can accommodate almost 600, the complex includes two smaller lecture rooms with a capacity of around 200 each, seven seminar rooms for 40 to 80 and a 280 sqm foyer to cater for events. As might be expected of a technologically-focused centre of education, all the rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art media technology. Audio is a key element throughout and was supplied by NPB Veranstaltungstechnik of Wilnsdorf, who chose CODA Audio.

CEO of NPB Veranstaltungstechnik Christian Keil describes the brief:

“The specification for the systems was to generate a very good stereo image with good directional orientation – the greatest emphasis was placed on optimal speech intelligibility. Since events and seminars also take place in the lecture theatres, the systems had to be suitable for music playback –  CODA Audio’s TiRAY system was the perfect choice.”

A total of 59 CODA Audio components were used in the project, with the main system comprising 12 x TiRAY per side, complemented by a centrally placed cluster of 3 x TiLOW (mono bass) and 3 further TiRAY. The systems across the whole project are driven by 7 x CODA Audio LINUS10-C DSP amplifiers.

Keil has enjoyed ten years working with CODA systems, during which time he has come to fully appreciate the company’s products, innovative approach and high level of service. As well as a strong relationship with the manufacturer, he cites features that are in his opinion unique:

“The rigging is unparalleled, and the performance of the speakers is sensational in relation to their weight. TiRAY, for example, is equipped with two small 5-inch cone drivers, yet it is full-range capable and equally suited to reproducing music and speech.”

Another of TiRAY’s characteristics came into play in the large lecture theatre at Siegen. The room is equipped with a large LED wall which meant that the NPB team had to cope with limited space:

“The compact dimensions of the TiRAY allowed us to overcome this hurdle as well. In any case, loudspeakers in lecture theatres should be as visually unobtrusive as possible – the more discreet the better – and for this reason we decided to also fly the compact TiLOW bass extensions.”

The University authorities are very satisfied with the results. In fact, more than that, according to Christian:

“They are thrilled – even if things are only running in test mode at the moment owing to the Coronavirus restrictions. Just how good the systems sound will become clear in the autumn when normal university operations are resumed.”
